Clear Head

Summer-Fall 2006 083A few times a year, I have a run that happens at just the right time. There's the craziness with the baby coming and all the home improvement projects. There's a couple tough weeks at work. There's the first stress headache I've had in years. Then there's a run that makes it all go away.

The weather cooled off today, dipping into the mid-80s after a couple hot, humid weeks in the mid to upper 90s. When I stepped out of my car I realized I left my iPod behind and decided to leave it there. I needed and wanted to hear what was going on in the world around me, especially on the most beautiful stretch of the W&OD trail between Hamilton and Paeonian Springs. After a few minutes, the headache that followed me from the office disappeared and my mind completely blanked out. It was the first time in weeks that I had some peace and quiet. And it went by so fast. Before I knew it, I finished my planned five miles and headed home feeling like I could run five more.

Sounds beautiful.

There are plenty of ways a person could try to boil off that stress and angst. I bet not many of them leave you feeling as satisfied and proud afterwards as a good hour of exercise.

what shall I say said...

it's funny isnt it how some runs are just so gorgeous, you can finish them and feel lighter both in body and spirit than you've felt in ages?

and then there are some that are so difficult, when your body's shutting down and all you want to do is sit on the sidewalk and eat chocolate ice cream...

is that every one's experience or just mine?

just chanced upon your blog. Have just started a running blig myself - http://hutchdelhihalfmarathon.blogspot.com

check it out sometime! happy running and good luck with the baby!

You're right about the iPod, every once in a while you got to leave it home, and get in touch with your mind. Many thing come to an end while running, I mean I do some of my best work on a run. Sometimes the Pod just kills the thought train.
Anyway, you have a real nice blog, so keep up the good work.
