6 Miles
I seriously considered running 7 miles yesterday--I even found a great run out in the countryside that would have fit the need. I just didn't get up early enough--indeed, I couldn't since I stayed out late at the bar Friday night. So, the only time I had free was 2:00pm, at which point it was 92 degrees (102 with the humidity factor). So I cut the run back to 6 miles, and ran on the oft shaded W&OD trail. Only this time I decided to go to the trail's end in Purcellville to start my run. It took me a while to find the end of the trail, but once I found it , I started straight in. Wow, was it hot outside. At several points I hoped the skies would just open with rain. The first three miles of the trail are pretty urban. Soon enough I will run the 9.5 miles from Leesburg to Purcellville and see all the great countrysides in between. I finished the fun in 57:25 at 167 bpm. Next time, I am getting up earlier.

Rest Day
Another day of rest before I tackle my longer run tomorrow. My legs are feeling great. Last night, I helped a good friend load a moving van for his relocation to southern VA. My legs felt fine. I really think I've turned the corner on the sluggishness that followed me back from the honeymoon.
Now, if only the weather can cooperate tomorrow. (Right now the forecast is for scattered thunderstorms.)

4 Miles
I barely rolled outta bed this morning, but I'm glad I did. The morning air was cool after severe thunderstorms last night. I drove out to the W&OD trail and ran alongside the trail as much as possible. The horse trails were damp and soft, very forgiving to my feet and legs. Along the way I saw a couple of deer, maybe 20 feet away. I finished the run in 37:30 at 156 bpm. Afterwards, my body felt great, very relaxed. It seemed like I'd worked out all the kinks from earlier in the week. My legs feel great today--good enough to perhaps lengthen the Saturday run!

Rest Day
By my training schedule, today I take it easy. I still woke up early to continue the adjustment my body is making in the wee hours. Switching my schedule by just an hour has left me suprisingly sluggish at times.

5 Miles
I woke up early this morning to fit in a 5 mile run before heading to work. I started from the doorstep and ran out to Dry Mill Road to get to the huge hill on Woodburn (400 feet up over 1.6 miles), finishing in about 48 minutes. My heart averaged 158 bpm, much lower than most of my summer runs under the sun.
Here are the pros and cons I've found to running in the morning:

At Long Last
After a hiatus, I've decided to bring this blog back to life. Here is where things stand:
On October 5, I will run in the Army Ten-Miler in Washington, D.C. with my good friend Alan. I started running again back in November and kept good progress until a couple months before my wedding, when vacations, summer heat, changing jobs, and too many happy hours just plain got in the way. About a week before the wedding, I picked up the pace and ran nearly every day--something that turned out to be a huge stress reliever. Now I'm back from my honeymoon and it's time to re-focus on the race.
I put in 18 miles on the road last week, mostly at 10 min/mile paces. In some ways, I felt like I was learning to run all over again. My legs felt awkard and slow. But things are starting to turn the corner. My 6 mile run on Saturday came in at just under 58 minutes, with negative splits. That was a bit of a confidence booster. I really want to run the 10-miler with sub-10 minute miles (though one day, I want to get it down to 8).
After my wife got tired of eating at 9pm, I decided I'd better start running in the morning. Today was my first morning run in a long time. It felt good to get going earlier and the cooler air was much friendlier than the warmer, more humid late afternoon/evening. I ran a little harder than usual, just to see where things stood. I finished the 3 miles in 27:55 at a with my heart doing 165 bpm.
